TWO MARQUETRY BOXES CELEBRATING THE COLOR QUEEN COLLECTION
This fall, Mellerio – the world’s oldest family-owned jewelry maison founded in 1613 – joins forces with Brazilian designer Silvia Furmanovich, celebrated for her innovative use of natural materials and commitment to global craftsmanship, to unveil the first chapter in a new creative partnership. Debuting in Tokyo this October and in New York this November, the collaboration begins with two one-of-a-kind marquetry jewelry boxes inspired by Mellerio’s vibrant Color Queen collection of rings.
Conceived as both sculptural vessels and collectible art-works, the boxes marry Brazilian marquetry with French high-jewelry tradition. Crafted by artisans in the Amazon rainforest using centuries-old techniques, their intricate wooden exteriors are complemented by interiors finished in France. This collaboration is also a conversation between two creative women – Silvia Furmanovich and Laure-Isabelle Mellerio – each guiding her respective house with vision and sensitivity. They both share a common love for color and nature.
At the helm of Maison Mellerio is Laure-Isabelle Mellerio, a 14th-generation descendant of the founding family. With a background in interior design, art history and gemology, she brings a richly layered perspective to her role as President and Artistic Director, one that harmonizes historical depth with contemporary creativity. Silvia Furmanovich contributes a distinctive design language shaped by her exploration of global craftsmanship, deep knowledge of natural materials and mastery of marquetry traditions.
Maison Mellerio’s Color Queen collection, designed by Laure-Isabelle Mellerio, draws inspiration from the Italian Renaissance and the cultural renaissance it brought to France. Each joyful ring in the collection is named to reflect its distinctive hue and charm, crafted in yellow gold and set with vibrant colorful gemstones – a tribute to the Italian artisans who, like the Mellerio family, helped shape French artistic heritage during the reign of François I. The Italian origins of the Maison are also found in the chromaticism of its creations. Playing with contrasts and shades, the jewelry creates a playful and poetic palette evoking Mediterranean joy. The colorful jewelry pieces combining historical heritage and contemporary vitality become a source of pleasure and even more an invitation to dream.
BOX NO. 1: A QUEEN’S SPRING
Inspired by antique Japanese folding screens, this piece reflects Silvia Furmanovich’s enduring fascination with East Asian motifs. A blossoming garden of stylized flowers unfolds across the lid, each bloom crowned with a raised wooden cabochon each symbolic of one of Mellerio’s Color Queen rings. Architectural yet painterly, the box unites ornament and narrative in a deeply personal expression.
BOX NO. 2: BUTTERFLIES IN FLIGHT
A meditation on movement and metamorphosis, the second box reveals a constellation of butterflies suspended midflight. A recurring motif in Furmanovich’s work, the butterflies are rendered in intricate, layered marquetry, their delicate bodies reimagined as Mellerio’s Color Queen ring settings each one unique, expressive, and full of motion. Echoing the first design, sculpted cabochons set in precious metals add a tactile, three-dimensional quality, inviting both visual and sensory engagement.
